Intellectual Laziness and Dishonesty

Intellectual Laziness and Dishonesty

People like stories and often the simpler the better. However, when we tell patients stories that are too simple, the message gets distorted, often so much so that we start believing these simple stories too. Stories, such as weakness as being the cause of pain/poor motor abilities or perceived tissue pathologies, such as fascial restriction, trigger points, SI joint being out of place, are all too common in our shared professions. Being called lazy or intellectually dishonest may come as an insult, but instead, might it instead be an impetus for change?

I see the effects of manual therapy as being due to a cascade of factors, rather than the simpler stories of tissue impact. I also see the impacts of exercise as being far greater than simple strengthening a weak muscle. Our therapeutic world is complex. Patients may not be ready for the full, unedited version of how our work helps, but they deserve more than a dumbed-down story.
