Demonizing Manual Therapy

A new article came to my attention today, one written by Chad Cook, PT, Ph.D., titled, The Demonization of Manual Therapy. Chad has been a defender of manual therapy as a valuable adjunct to many interventions and has put up some great podcasts and interviews that I’ve enjoyed over the past two year. This new article takes a point-by-point position on the relevant points that are frequently used to discredit manual therapy. In the past 2 decades, manual therapy has lost ground, alt least in the physical therapy profession, to exercise and education, for many reasons. Most revolve around repeated statements about manual therapy’s tendency to build dependency in patients, with exercise seen as dependency-building. While there are many other points used against manual therapy, I will now link you to Chad’s full-text article, as he walks the reader through his logic. Manual therapy has value and no intervention should be seen as a one-size-fits-everyone intervention. Enjoy.
