Manual Therapy in Voice/Swallowing Disorders: An Introduction to the Evidence. An online course.

Manual Therapy in Voice/Swallowing Disorders: An Introduction to the Evidence. An online course.

The Course

NOTE: The content of this 2-hour Introduction to the Evidence and Approach Online Course is already included in the 8-hour Hands-On Online Course. There is no need to purchase both courses.

This standalone course mirrors the pre-seminar online module for my newly revised Foundations in Manual Therapy: Voice and Swallowing Disorders Seminar. With a target audience being SLPs/SLTs, Vocal Professionals, and PTs, OTs, and MTs with interest in this area, this course reflects the most current views on manual therapy impacts. This process, once thought to be “issues in the tissues”, is now seen as a complex, multifactorial process from peripheral signaling through central mechanisms, and includes potential behavioral/biopsychosocial factors. Not easy stuff, but we unpackaged the basic design in a form that can allow you to see beyond the tissues. If you are looking to deepen your model and understanding, I believe you will be pleased with this course.

PLEASE NOTE: This is not a course that teaches specific techniques. Rather, it introduces the learner to the science and evidence behind an approach to manual therapy that is inclusionary to biopsychosocial perspectives and sets the tone for adding a patient-centered model to any given modality, as well as being tailored to the hands-on courses that are taught through Foundations in Manual Therapy Seminars. Due to expanding the basis of application beyond just the clinician’s experience, the learner will find this content a useful addition to any intervention. Given the unique approach given to manual therapy and its effects, this course is relevant for all who have an interest in seeking and updated understanding of biopsychosocial approaches to manual therapy.

CEUs are currently approved by NCBTMB (including for NY MTs) for 2.0 Home Study CEs. ASHA CEUs will follow shortly. PTs and OTs who are able to self-submit to their state licensing board will find the necessary supporting documentation in the downloads.

The Cost

This for-credit online course costs $60. While this may seem expensive for a 2-hour online course when many courses are now quite cheap (or even free), this course is priced below the per-hour cost of all of my live seminars. More importantly, the content of this course represents the last decade of work for me, moving from the tissue-based fairy tales that I was taught and into more plausible, though initially more confusing, concepts of neuroscience, behavioral science, and pain science. If you are seeking a fresh and solid grounding in how to move your manual therapy model into alignment with current viewpoints of medicine and health, I believe that you will feel your money and time was well spent.

Course Description (ASHA)

The clinician learned to apply the evidence for manual therapy (MT) as a multifactorial method of impacting issues of voice and swallowing. By using a biopsychosocial approach, the SLP understood how a patient-led, shared decision-making model optimizes clinical outcomes. Through examples and demonstration videos, the SLP saw how the theory flows into practice.

Learning Objectives for this online course:

After successful completion of this online module, the therapist will:

  1. Be able to compare and contrast the traditional “tissue-based” explanatory model of change with neurologically and biopsychosocial-based models with respect to manual therapy.
  2. In keeping with evidence-based practice, be able to describe how treatment protocols can be derived from patient perspectives.
  3. Be able to describe how accepting uncertainty in evaluation and treatment may reflect actually knowing more about causation.

Successful completion of the course and associated award of ASHA CEUs (and other CEUs) are contingent upon:

  1. Completion of the full online course.
  2. A passing score on the written, 10-question multiple-choice examination given at the end of the online course. A grade of 80% or higher is required to pass.
  3. Failure to complete the course or pass the quiz will result in the forfeiture of the ASHA CEUs (or other CEs/CEUs).
